Her family massacred by marauding dog soldiers on the Bozeman Trail, young Martha Rose Buchanan miraculously survived to be traded across the Plains until she came to rest in a desert pueblo somewhere west of Fort Misery. Here she was raised by medicine women amid soothsayers & seers weaving stories of haints, shades & lost spirits at work in the world.
